Cowhide Care Guide

With just a little routine care, your cowhide rug will remain soft, clean, and timeless for years to come. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your cowhide rug in top condition.

When Your Cowhide First Arrives

It’s normal for your rug to have folds or creases from shipping. Here's how to smooth them out:

  • Lay it flat in a warm, dry space. Most folds will relax naturally over a few days.

  • Reverse roll the rug gently in the opposite direction of the crease.

  • Place heavy books or flat objects on stubborn areas for a few hours.

  • Use a steamer on the underside only (not the hair side), being careful not to soak it.

  • Avoid placing it near moisture or in direct sun for too long during this process.

Routine Cleaning

Keeping your cowhide rug clean doesn’t take much - just regular upkeep.

What You’ll Need:

• Firm-bristle brush (like a scrubbing brush)
• Gentle leather soap or baby/clarifying shampoo
• Household sponge
• Vacuum with brush attachment
• Fabric protector (like Scotchgard™)

Steps:

  1. Vacuum regularly using the brush attachment, always in the direction of the hair.

  2. Take it outside occasionally to shake out debris or gently beat it with a stick.

  3. Never soak your rug - moisture can damage the hide and tanning.

Deep Cleaning Tips

For spills or deeper dirt:

  • Use a steam cleaner cautiously - avoid over-wetting.

  • Dry in sunlight, but monitor closely. Too much sun can cause the hide to become brittle.

Dealing with Stains

  • Avoid alkaline soaps - they damage the hide.

  • Gently rub the stain with a damp sponge and mild soap (baby shampoo or leather cleaner).

  • Rinse lightly, then let it dry in the sun.

Preventive Protection

  • After cleaning, apply a fabric protector like Scotchgard™ to repel future stains.

  • Reapply as needed, especially in high-traffic areas.
